The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
