The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
