Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or did there exist a thread holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to determine if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Matteo's Unexpected Return

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this year. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The signing restriction forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He joined in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to determine the nature of his skill set. Labeled as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
